Excellent spirit and a delicious lunch
The first major tournament of the 2018/19 summer season was completed at the Kerikeri Bowling Club earlier this month.
The Cowley’s Hire Women’s Classic Sixes tournament attracted two teams each from the Kamo and Cooper’s Beach bowling clubs along with sides representing Far North RSA and the host club and was played in excellent conditions and spirit.
The unusual format used in the event gave competitors a chance to play in a different position in each game with the event report noting skips as leads proved particularly trying: “as skips don’t usually throw the jack with quite a few ending up in the ditch!”
The format saw teams playing four games of 1 hour 20 minutes along with a break for a delicious lunch which gave old friends from different clubs an opportunity to catch up.
Match convener Dawn King thanked all the sponsors for their generosity, praised the standard of bowls throughout the day, and made special mention to the green keepers for all their hard work in presenting a great playing surface.
Many thanks also went to the men who worked tirelessly in the kitchen, with Ian Dunn, Graeme Hunt, and Paul Strong acknowledged for a job well done.
Winners on the day were Christine Hodren, Sue Mcleod, Ellaine Albury, Rebecca Papera, Lyn McKeating, Dawn King (Kerikeri) 1; Pam Naylor, Pam Roughton, Eileen Pickard, Gaye Parker, Carol Sell, Val Hall (Cooper’s Beach) 2; Bev Shand, Patsy Thorton, Kyra Rapana, Liz Walters, Sue Smith, Shirley Marr (Cooper’s Beach).
Next open tournament at Kerikeri the First Electrical Christmas Cheer Triples (any combo) on Wednesday, December 12, always a very popular event so competitors were advised to get their entries in soon.
