Representa­tives from the Houhora Golf Club playing in Northland’s Champion of Champions over the weekend sadly came home emptyhande­d having found the Hikurangi hilltop course very challengin­g; the report from the Far North club noting “a bit more experience on steep and undulating fairways being required” from the local players. Meanwhile, the usual Sunday club competitio­n produced two dead heats firstly with Frank Hurinui and John McIntyre finishing with 68 points nett and Bruce Hall and Lenny Shailes with 69. Elsewhere the 9-hole Wednesday haggle saw Richard Thompson coming home first with 22 stableford followed by Ivor Bates with 18 and Glenys Rogers 17.
