Kaitaia’s Te Kura Kau­papa Ma¯ori o Pukemiro tu­muaki Ngawa­iata Evans is proud of all that her stu­dents achieved in 2018, but her high­est praise was re­served for three who won $25,000 Univer­sity of Waikato (Te Pae­wai o te Rangi) schol­ar­ships in recog­ni­tion of out­stand­ing aca­demic achieve­ment.

Aroha Kara, Waimaru Snow­den and Keani Sa­muels also re­ceived $1000 Te Kura Kau­papa Ma¯ori o Pukemiro Te Roopu Wha¯iti schol­ar­ships.

Ms Evans said up to 50 univer­sity schol­ar­ships were awarded na­tion­ally to stu­dents who demon­strate aca­demic ex­cel­lence, lead­er­ship po­ten­tial and com­mu­nity cit­i­zen­ship, the aca­demic com­po­nent re­quir­ing ex­cel­lence in NCEA lev­els 2 and 3.

“For three Year 13 stu­dents from this kura to be awarded th­ese schol­ar­ships is an amaz­ing achieve­ment,” she said.

“Praise must go to our stu­dents’ drive to suc­ceed, their wha¯nau and our wharekura ka­iako, who have helped them achieve aca­demic ex­cel­lence in their stud­ies.”

The fol­low­ing Year 11-13 awards were also pre­sented. Kapa haka

Dr Bruce Gre­gory merit awards for out­stand­ing achieve­ment in kapa haka: Keani Sa­muels and Waimaru Snow­den. IMOKO Foun­da­tion $200 schol­ar­ship for univer­sity — Keani Sa­muels.

“This year has been sig­nif­i­cant, be­cause with the open heart and open mind of our wha¯nau and com­mu­nity we have been able to achieve all th­ese out­stand­ing ac­com­plish­ments,” Ms Evans said.

“I would like to thank our ka­iako who have put in end­less hours of mahi to en­sure our tamariki are given the best op­por­tu­nity for learn­ing. It is a priv­i­lege and hon­our to have such a pas­sion­ate team who share this same vi­sion. Ka Tu¯ ahau Hei Raukura.”
