More trees attacked by poison
Further reports are emerging of trees coming under attack in the Bay of Islands after news that four po¯ hutukawa on the beachfront at O¯ pito Bay had been poisoned and were expected to die.
Far North District councillor Ann Court said she believed a large magnolia, on the corner of SH10 and Kahikatearoa Rd, in Waipapa, had met a similar fate.
She first noticed the tree, which flowered prolifically in spring, was ailing in early October. She could see no drill holes, but the grass around it was dead. Since then the tree also appeared to have succumbed.
“It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to see it’s been poisoned,” Cr Court said.
It is not clear whether the magnolia is on council road reserve or private land. The property is currently vacant.
