New record for rescue chopper

-

With three weeks still to go, 2018 was already the busiest year on record for the Northland rescue helicopter service according to chief pilot and CEO Peter Turnbull.

“Over the 11 months to November we responded to 903 callouts, already the most in one year,” he said.

That equated to 1290 “engine hours,” with an average flight time of 84 minutes. Pilots had also spent 45 hours waiting for the helicopter engines to cool down.

“This year we celebrated our 30th year in operation, making our annual appeal extra special,” Mr Turnbull added.

“We attended three MORE FM breakfasts and launched our third children’s storybook, Mighty Mike to the Rescue.

“Like every year we have been hugely humbled by the generosity of our local community, and this year has been no different. We are so grateful to everyone who has so far contributed during the appeal.

“A big thank you to our principal sponsors, Northpower and Top Energy, who not only match donations dollar for dollar up to $150,000, but also handle the nitty gritty that makes the appeal a success each year.

“We would also like to thank the Breakfast team at MORE FM, who hosted breakfasts in Kerikeri, Kaitaia and Dargaville.

“We are incredibly grateful for all the donations and support we have received this year. Without help from the Northland Regional Council, Oxford Sports Trust, our sponsors and the community we wouldn’t be able to continue the lifesaving work that we do.

“The team at Northland Rescue Helicopter would like to take the opportunity to wish all our fantastic supporters and the whole Northland community a very Merry Christmas and a safe and happy New Year. And we know we say it often, but please remember to look out for one another these summer holidays — on the road, in the water and at the beach.”
