JC Park Sk8 comp delivers the goods

-

The best skateboarders and scooter riders in Kaitaia converged on the town skatepark on Saturday to ply their trade and vie for a prize pool worth $2000 up for grabs in the JC Park Sk8 Comp.

The Far North Surf Shop event attracted around half a dozen riders to contest the skateboard title and a field of around one dozen in the scooter division.

Contest director Derek Ashley noted all top three placegetters in the skateboard section delivered a “high level” of ability, while the interest shown in the scooter division could see him renaming the event as the JC Park Sk8 and Scooter Comp in the future.

Ashley has been involved with running a skate competition off and on around Christmas time at the Jaycee Park Skatebowl for a number of years now. He said the one-day event wasn’t held every year as skateboarding enjoyed fluctuating “waves” of interest in the North.

On behalf of organisers, Ashley thanked DJ K9 for providing the soundtrack to proceedings, and local businesses for sponsoring prizes and supporting the competition in various ways.

Results were, Scooters: Rolland Dunn 1, Kahnyae Hobson 2, Bryson Pure 3; Skateboard Division: Kadin Matiu 1, Raymond McIntyre 2, Vinnie Hutchison 3.
