More centre titles claimed by Kerikeri

-

The Bowls Far North Centre completed the men’s singles and women’s triples championships at Kerikeri over the weekend of Saturday and Sunday, December 8 and 9. Results from the two events were as follows.

MEN’S SINGLES

In the men’s section the qualifiers from three sections were Anthony George (Russell), Ian Lewis, Cedric Campbell, Pat Higginbotham (Opononi), David Hood (Kerikeri), Barrie Johnstone (Kaeo), Barry Allison, Peter Dorreen and Monte Pawa Jnr (Far North RSA).

With seven byes in the first round, Higginbotham eliminated Johnston, while the following round George beat Higginbotham, Hood beat Lewis, Allison beat Dorreen, and Pawa Jnr beat Campbell Cedric.

This led to only four players remaining with Hood beating George and progress to meat Pawa Jnr who eliminated Allison. The final saw some excellent shots played but it was the ever experienced Hood who won the title in style 26-17.

WOMEN’S TRIPLES

The centre women’s triples qualifiers were Christine Hodren Lyn McKeating, Ellaine Albury, Johanna Hood, Dawn King, Rebekah Papera (Kerikeri), Jean Huxtable Jill Phillips, Joanne Milich, (RSA), and Margaret Wildbore, Glenis Love and Gaye Parker (Cooper’s).

In the first round of the finals, Wildbore beat Hood while Hodren beat Huxtable, this leaving a final between the Cooper’s Beach and Kerikeri factions with the latter combination proving too strong on the day and claiming yet another centre title for the Kerikeri club.

Organisers thanked the host clubs over the weekend for looking after the players, bar staff, greenkeepers, markers, match and umpires.
