The Northland Age

Not so long and windy

-

Some of New Zealand’s most historic places are at the end of long and windy roads, but they are much easier to find now that Heritage New Zealand Pouhere Taonga has launched a free Heritage Trails app.

‘Path to Nationhood’ is a suite of six road tours that lead to places in Northland that are central to the region and the country’s history. Packed with historical snippets, the tours tell the big stories – and give some of the quirky details – about preTreaty New Zealand.

Meanwhile, people driving through the Waikato can follow the course of the Waikato War by downloading the ‘Waikato War Driving Tour’.

And for those in Christchurch, ‘Public Houses, Private Lives’ is a walking tour of five former colonial hotels in Christchurch that celebrates the social and archaeological heritage of each. It also provides a glimpse into some of the archaeological discoveries made following the Canterbury earthquakes.

The tours work with either Android or Apple devices. To download the app go to http:/ /www.heritage.org.nz/apps
