Potting mix is hazardous
The Environmental Protection Authority has issued a warning about the risks of using pot mix after the death of a Christchurch gardener from Legionnaires’ disease (legionellosis).
EPA Safer Homes programme spokeswoman Lizzie Wilson said potting mix was a common gardening supply, also sold as potting soil or potting compost.
“This tragic incident highlights the importance of using safety gear when using gardening products around the home, which in the case of potting mix should extend to wearing gloves and face protection,” she said.
“We recommend people read and follow the product’s instructions and labels carefully, which may advise of further safety measures to minimise the risk to yourself or your family.
“While the EPA does not have a regulatory role in potting mix, through our Safer Homes programme we take action to promote, maintain and enhance consumer safety when using risky substances around the home. We also encourage retailers and manufacturers to review their existing labelling and signage, and look for other ways to reinforce their safety messaging to the public.”
General gardening product safety information was available on the EPA’s website, and a Safer and Healthier Gardening Guide, produced by the Ministry of Health, was available via the HealthEd Portal.
The EPA’s advice for gardeners includes to check the labelling of all products. If working on plants that will be eaten, check the label for the withholding period, and write it down somewhere so it is not forgotten.
Wear gloves, and check the label to see if you need other protection, like a mask or safety glasses are needed; avoid contact with the eyes, face and skin.
Work with hazardous products on a calm day, and be very careful when working near streams or other water. Many garden products should not be used near water. Never pour leftover products down stormwater drains.
Do not buy or use products that don’t have labels.
Seek advice regarding the safest and most effective product for the job, and choose those that are as gentle as possible. Products sold as natural, organic and environmentallyfriendly can still be hazardous.
Always keep gardening products in their original packages or containers.
