Winning at singles on Church Road

-

The Church Rd Club completed its championship singles tournaments over the weekend of January 26 and 27, although due to a number of factors, both sections saw reduced fields compared with previous years.

The men’s section featured only two entries and in the end John Richardson prevailed to beat John Fox Champkins 21-10 in the final and bag his first club title. The final/ possible final saw both players taking out a singular number of ends; the difference in the end was that Richardson gained 2 points or more on his winning ends compared with Fox Champkins’ 1.

The women’s title was won for the second year running by Bunty Barron by beating Hazel Ulkeman 17-4 in the final on the Sunday. Ulkeman was noted for fighting back from being 13-1 down at one point in the match.

Following late withdrawals, the women’s field featured four players. The other two bowlers were Shirley Crabtree and Shirley Young, with the former eliminating her namesake in round 2, then Ulkeman taking Crabtree’s last life in round 3 with a 22-11 win.
