Kerikeri win by a whisker

WRMK Kerikeri 161/9 (31.4 overs) beat Kamo High 1st XI 160 all out (41.1)

Kerikeri claimed victory, just , in an intensely fought clash from round 3/7 of the Northland Cricket Reserve Grade’s Declaratio­n Cricket championsh­ip.

Played at Kerikeri High School in warm, late summer weather conditions on Saturday afternoon, the homeside won the toss and elected to bowl first, noted manager Lowell Gundry. He went on to note no individual bowler stood out and the Kamo High wickets were evenly shared around.

The standout in the second innings was Luke Halligan, who scored 55 with everyone else “chipping in” towards a successful­ly chasing down of the target set by the visitors. Gundry admitted the Kerikeri seniors were actually “lucky to win” with only one wicket to spare.

“One of those games where both teams fought hard for a good result. They [Kamo High] are a very young team, but they play good cricket, They will be really good in a couple of years,” he said.

Other results from Saturday saw Bream Bay 151/10 (46.4) lose to Maungakara­mea 245/9 (40), Onerahi 198/6 (50) beat City Reserves 173/5 (40), with no result at edition time from the Kamo Reserves vs WBHS 2nd XI clash.

STANDINGS: Maungakara­mea (played 3) 15 points, Kerikeri (3) 9, Onerahi (3) 9, City (3) 9, Kamo (2) 6, Bream Bay 1st (3) 6, WBHS 2nd XI (2) 6, Kamo High 1st X1 (3) 6.

Round 4 this Saturday sees Kerikeri hosting WBHS 2nd XI, representi­ng their fifth home game in as many Saturdays.
