The Northland Age

A first for Kaitaia

-

The Ministry of Education’s open day at its new offices in Kaitaia was the first staged by the ministry anywhere, and a rarity for government departments in general, Northland manager Hera Gage said as she watched rapper Tihei Harawira entertain his audience.

The offices, purpose-built on the corner of Commerce St and Redan Rd, were light years ahead of the Melba St premises staff had moved from, she said, while the open day was just the first manifestation of the ministry’s intent to maintain a much closer relationship with the community than in the past.

The new premises comprised 22 work spaces, for a current staff of 12, so offered room to expand. There was also room for other agencies (one person from Barnados was already there), and a community space where people would always be welcome for a cup of tea and/ or a ko¯ rero.

Three stars from Far North’s Got Talent also performed throughout the day. Other attractions including moko stencils and balloon animals, while Kaitaia College, Kaitaia Primary, Nga¯ Whatua and Kaitaia Abundant Life School set up fundraising cake stalls.

Sizzled sausages were served free, and ministry staff were keen to talk about career opportunities.

The building was formally opened last month by Sir Hekenukumai Busby.
