Pont prevails on 17th end at Church Rd
The start of February saw the Kaitaia Church Road Bowling Club complete a number of domestic championship events.
A round up of the three separate events began with the women’s junior singles which was won by Tessa Pont after she beat Anne Ace 20-15 in the final/ possible final.
The match between the two did not disappoint as first one then the other held the lead with only 2 points separating the pair on the 17th end before Pont scored three to prevail.
Pont had claimed the first of Ace’s two lives in round 3 where, after trailing on the 12th end, she went on to triumph 18-11.
The other player in the field was Shirley Young, who lost her first life to Pont in round 1 (with Ace sitting on the bye) then was eliminated by Ace in round 2 by a comfortable 21-9 margin.
Elsewhere, the winners of the women’s fours and 1st year singles titles were also found. Lesley Riddle won the latter title despite only bowling for a few weeks.
Two teams contested the fours with Bunty Barron’s team (featuring Shirley Crabtree, Ace, and Hazel Ulkeman) eventually emerging victorious against Raewyn Baucke with Liz Anderson, Pat Watkins and Shirley Young.
Baucke’s crew drew first blood in round 1, winning 11-8 as Barron’s bunch proved slow out off the starting blocks.
However, the ensuing final/ possible final saw a reversal of fortunes, with Barron’s team running out convincing 20-4 winners to set up a winnertakes-all final. It proved a very good game, with Barron four racing off to a strong lead by the 10th end only for the Baucke quartet to respond and get within 4 points.
However, with two 3-point ends, the Barron-led four surged to a 22-12 victory.
The men’s title was won by John Fox Champkins, John Richardson, David Riddle and Sean Ledingham.
