Fairies booked for Kainui Vineyard

-

Kainui Vineyard, on Kapiro Rd, north of Kerikeri, has hosted some memorable entertainment, and will again next week when the Kerikeri Theatre Company stages Shakespeare’s turns, where magic plays havoc between mortals and fairies, has made the play a favourite of theatregoers since it was first performed in the late 16th century.

One of the funniest scenes is the ‘play within a play,’ where simple tradesmen present an amateurish sketch to royals and nobles, with hilarious results.

Barbara Kirkman, who is directing the play, said she was delighted to have the agreement of Kainui Vineyard to stage the performance there.

“The ambience of the al fresco setting is just lovely. The grassy slopes with trees and vines and the lighting of a late summer evening will echo the forest scenes in the play,” she said.

The cast of 30, plus an ensemble of musicians, have been rehearsing for several months at the theatre company’s new base in Kerikeri’s Sammaree Place.

“Everyone in the cast can take huge pride in how it is shaping up,” Barbara said. “The teamwork to create this quality production has been fantastic. I think the Bard himself would be well pleased.”

There are three evening performances (6.30pm) for March 7-9, with a 2.30pm matinee on Sunday March 10. The Kainui Cellar bar will be open, but only alcohol purchased on the premises may be consumed there. Audiences can take a hamper and comfortable seating. Tickets at www.iTicket.co.nz or Paper Plus in Kerikeri.
