Finals deliver class action

-

Another two domestic championship events were completed at the Cooper’s Beach Bowling Club recently.

In extremely hot conditions, four women’s teams and seven men contested triples titles in a two-bowls format playing a two-life system of 18 ends or 13⁄4 hours, with no time limit for the final/ possible final.

Four games were played on the Saturday with Pam Naylor, Kyra Rapana and Shirley Marr battling Liz Walters, Mary Wright and Sue Smith for the women’s title after the two teams had advanced to final day’s play on Sunday, both on one life each.

It was noted Walters’ team got away to a flying start but dropped a 5 with two ends to go to make the score 16-11. This set up an interesting finish in which Naylor needed another 5 shots to force an extra end. Walters’ team was having none of it, however, and went on to win 17-12. The other teams entered were Margaret Wildbore, Glenis Love and Gaye Parker; and Ngaire Watts, Val Hall and Sheryl Hetaraka.

The men’s title was taken out by Peter Wilson, Stu Pederson and Garr Sparnon with both lives after they beat Nigel Leslie, Doug Robb and Barrie Morgan who had advanced to the possible final with one life left. It was a real battle by all accounts with Leslie’s team leading 10-5 after 11 ends, and 12-9 after 14, but then dropping a four, one and four on the next three ends allowing Wilson and his team to triumph an 18-12.

Other teams in the men’s field were Jack Hughes, Trevor Wilcox and John Rapana; Bryon Corfield, Dennis Breckon and Mike Bairstow; Ross Hulme, Ken Smith and Denis Hailey; Jim Naylor, Dave Roughton and Steve Barber; and Barry Townsley, Dennis Lattimer and Ivan Zagni. Both finals were exciting to watch with organisers thanking those who turned up to support, and those who assisted over both days.

The Cooper’s Beach club ran the Pam Roughton Wrathall Rosebowl (any combination triples) event on Saturday; report forthcoming.
