Rosie and Vern Ireland are experts at growing large specimens of almost every known vegetable in their garden north of Waiharara, but this year’s red onion crop is spectacular.

Rosie, who gave Glenda Job the seeds for her gargantuan tomatoes (Not many of these to the pound, February 21), arrived at the Age office last week with four, each weighing half a kilo.

“I’d like to see anyone beat these,” she said.

There was nothing special about the onions’ origins — they began life as a punnet of seedlings bought at The Warehouse — and she had no particular horticultural secrets, apart from growing vegetables with love and talking to them. No politics, she said, just telling them on a daily basis that they were looking beautiful.
