Renewed hope in Kaikohe

-

‘Doing the simple things exceptionally well' was the challenge put to 26 boys at Friday’s launch of the Tu Tama Ora programme at Kaikohe Intermediate School.

The launch was strongly supported by guests from neighbouring schools, parents and wha¯nau, kaumatua, kuia and community agencies.

The school has entered into a threeway partnership with Te Ru¯nanga-a¯-Iwi o Nga¯puhi and the JR Mckenzie Trust, enabling Tu Tama Ora to maximise the use of resources and networks in support of an outdoor education boys’ teaching and learning programme.

A particular focus will see Ma¯ori boys engage in specific educational opportunities and tasks that are steeped in Te Tu o Nga¯puhi, a culturally responsive learning programme designed to reconnect them to their culture, language and identity.

Teachers Ursula Beazley and Kutania Taniere said they were looking forward to the next two years and seeing the development and growth of their students, adding that working on enhancing specific skills and attributes to a high level would be essential to the success of the programme.
