Snapper seem shy in D Bay
The Doubtless Bay Light line and Rod Fishing Club recently held competitions for two combined trophies over a recent weekend, the Dive Shed Trophy for heaviest snapper, and Richard Fox Memorial Trophy for average weight snapper.
Club reporter Liz Virgo said a total of six snapper were weighed in at the event, along with three decent-sized kahawai but otherwise, the fishing wasn’t particularly memorable.
“Several anglers had tales similar to my own, in that snapper were quite shy biting, and it was certainly difficult to find larger ones.”
Trevor Davidson won the Dive Shed Trophy for catching the heaviest snapper at 3.06kg, forcing Allen Parker to settle for the runner-up prize with a 2.08kg snapper.
The average weight snapper was 1.80kg, with Gary Nears’ 2kg specimen closest to this earning him the Richard Fox Memorial Trophy, while the heaviest kahawai at 2.44kg was weighed in by Jean Nears.
On behalf of the organisers, Virgo congratulated all the prize winners.
She also thanked club stalwart Frank King for bringing along two rods and reels as lucky draw prizes.
These had been donated by a local lady, Mrs Begovic (the rods had belonged to her late husband), who wished for club members to have them.
They were won by John Wyatt and Abi Baer.
The club’s next competition will be held on the weekend of April 6-7.
