Four top blokes celebrated at Eastern

The unwavering commitment and dedication of four men to their local rugby club was celebrated at the aftermatch of the Eastern vs Awanui game on Saturday evening.

Phil Jecentho, Eric Williams, Mike Jurlina and Eric Foster had been presented with life membership to the Eastern United RFC at the club’s AGM earlier this year but it was decided to acknowledge the citations after the senior team’s first home game of the season.

Eastern president Dave Jurlina said the motion to present the four men with life membership this season was made unanimously and the honours were very well deserved.

“They have all been involved in this club for 30 years or more.

“They all would have started with us as players,” said Jurlina, noting however that the life memberships had more to do with going above and beyond the call of duty.

This could be for anything from being on the committee, coaching and supporting, helping prepare the aftermatch meals on matchday, and being regularly involved in working bees to donating gear and other volunteer activities.

Life members get free entry to the club on matchday, Jurlina noted, before adding with a wry smile that no one in the club got free drinks.
