Hot season rolls on at Church Road

-

The Kaitaia Church Road Bowling Club ticked off a couple events off its summer programme last month, including the annual Folders Marston Moor Pairs Tournament.

The event attracted teams from Houhora, the Far North RSA and Cooper’s Beach, who joined the host club members. On a hot day that only became hotter, nine pairs took to the green and as the day progressed some very good bowling was produced, along with a number of tight games.

It was noted that going into the last two games, everyone was still in the running before the remaining teams were left to face off in an exciting final.

Results were, David Riddle and Helen Dephoff 4 wins, 25 ends, 42 points, 1; Adele Gardner and Jill Phillips 31⁄2, 20, 41, Dave and Pam Roughton 3, 21, 36.

To complete a very busy month, the club held the Merle Gavin Pairs on February 265.

The Bells Produce tournament attracted a full green of 16 teams from Houhora, RSA, Cooper’s Beach, Oruru and hosting clubs taking part. As with previous competitions, four games of one hour each were played, which, the event report noted, was just as well as the day was so hot and “it was very welcome to hear the bell ring at the end of the last game”.

Again, many games were tight with as many as seven pairs left hunting for a top-three spot going into the fourth game. In the end, the winning team was the only one to produce a clean sweep. Results were, Cedric Campbell and Helen Dephoff 4 wins, 27 ends, 57 points, 1; Alex and Barrie Kinnear 3, 24, 51, 2; Jean Huxtable and Kathy Johnson 3, 24, 31.

The club’s next open competition is the Signs of Life/ Hart Pairs on Easter Monday, April 22.
