Instructions from passenger’s seat

-

Sunday, March 10, saw a small but enthusiastic bunch of drivers turn up at Taipa Speedway to thrash their cars for the entertainment of spectators watching from the stands.

With a smaller than usual turnout, organisers saw the opportunity for drivers who needed to do some fine tuning to test recent modifications they’d made to their mean machines.

A highlight was Terry ‘The Slasher’ Grigg making the most of it by locking up his back wheels and almost repeating his famous ‘over the bank’ manoeuvre perfected early on in his racing career.

Also notable were Lizzy Perry, ‘Cyclone’ Pam Fisher, Mike ‘Flat Tire’ Fryer (“who once again. .. got a flat tyre”) and Craig de Waal — driving Kathleen ‘8-Ball’ Allan’s car while she shouted instructions from the passenger’s seat — as the only multi-car group to go out on the day; and James Payne, who proved you don’t need other cars out there to be entertaining by literally hammering his ‘full contact’ stockcar for all it was worth, nearly once again rolling it without any help from anyone else.

Elsewhere, an extremely proud father egged on his two sons Corey and Caleb Hallett from the infield, yelling, “Faster! Faster!” every time they went past him, even though it was their first time driving solo.

One couldn’t help but think it won’t be long until ‘old dad’ gets retired so they can run for the adult titles instead of him.

■ The next meet at Taipa is this Sunday, March 31, starting at 1pm.
