Who wants to control the world?

-

Anyone who has ever wanted to take control of Planet Earth will soon be able to do just that courtesy of the Upsurge Bay of Islands Arts Festival.

An Interactive Earth, a two-metre-diameter fibreglass sphere, will be suspended from the jacaranda tree next to Kemp House in Kerikeri and illuminated from all sides by digital projectors, with an iPad control panel giving audience control over parameters such as development, nature, control and chaos, and hence the planet’s fate, from 7.30pm to 10pm on Saturday and Sunday.

It’s not the only free event during the six-day festival, which began on Tuesday. Christchurch actors/circus artists Lizzie Tollemache and David Ladderman, aka Rollicking Entertainment, will perform on Paihia’s Village Green from noon to 1.15pm tomorrow, at Kings Theatre Creative in Kawakawa from 10am to 11.15am on Saturday, and outside the Kaikohe Library from noon to 1.15pm on Sunday.

Free musical performances, all in the Turner Centre Theatre Bar in Kerikeri, began on Tuesday, with 19-year-old Ka¯eo singer Te Rina Kahle scheduled for tomorrow (6.45pm-7.45pm), An Interactive Earth will be suspended from the jacaranda tree next to Kemp House in Kerikeri for the Upsurge Bay of Islands Arts Festival starting on Saturday.

folk/pop duo Asch and Rogan (6.15pm-7.15pm on Saturday) and husband and wife acoustic duo WiEkko on Sunday (6.15pm7.15pm).

Auckland mural artist Erika Pearce is spending this week creating an environmentallythemed work of art on the Bluff wall on Paihia’s waterfront. Autumn Harvest was the design theme for the Kaitaia Floral Art Club last month, with seven designs completed for judging.

Loma Berghan won the senior category from Raewyn Pennell second and Elva Shine third, Suzanne White winning on the intermediate section and Michelle DeSousa in the novice.

This month all sections will create designs of their choice with the title Show and Tell, which means they will be expected to explain something about it.

Visitors and intending members are always welcome at Cornerstone, in Matthews Ave, at 10am on the fourth Monday of the month.
