New Pinny single is one of a kind

-

Merv Pinny, the Kerikeri dairy farmer turned ‘social action rocker,’ released a new radio single, Twisted Minds, last week.

Billed as an alternative rock song with rhythmic beats and catchy guitar riffs, it is described as living on the edge of fantasy while the message behind the song “shakes the very ground we stand on and call home”.

It’s a song about people ignoring gun violence and not wanting to face the cold reality of the world’s social problems.

It also has a musical story. The single was taken from the EP Twisted Minds, released last year, and incorporates a piece from every song on the EP, making it a truly unique piece of music. A single formed from an entire EP, including the single itself about social issues, is possibly the first of its kind.

Pinny has established an impressive audience, with more than 25,000 monthly listeners on Spotify and more than 20 million streams and views.

A reviewer says people were beginning to understand and appreciate the artistic creativity behind his music.

He has also earned critical acclaim, winning the best rock song and best rock video categories at the 2017 Akademia Music Awards in Los Angeles. He had been nominated by a radio DJ in Seattle on the strength of Can you hear the children cry?, which received wide airplay in the US, about war in the Middle East and the resulting refugee crisis.
