The Northland Age

Art on a tiny scale

-

Almost 100 artists have taken up the challenge of creating a tiny masterpiece on a canvas measuring just 100mm square.

The annual 100x100 Art Show, was a highlight of the Bay of Islands arts scene in the 1990s, but fizzled out when its founders left Northland. It was revived in 2017 by Mike Nettmann, and was instantly embraced by artists and the public.

Every work, regardless of whether it’s by a bigname artist or a high school student, is priced at $100.

Mike said 95 artists, from the Bay of Islands, Hokianga and Auckland, aged from 16 to 92, had taken part this year, their works ranging from exquisite pointillism to fine fabric art. Three generations of the Irving family of Kerikeri had submitted works.

The small format put creativity and ingenuity to the test, he added.

The exhibition, at the Turner Centre’s Theatre Bar, will remain on display until the end of the month.
