Sudden end to holiday

A German family’s Northland holiday came to a very sudden end on Thursday when their borrowed campervan and a car collided on SH1 just south of Kawakawa.

The crash, at Waiomio at about 5.30pm, was attended by the police, St John and the Kawakawa Fire Brigade, but no one was seriously hurt.

The German family were understood to have been visiting their daughter, who is on a study exchange in New Zealand, and borrowed the campervan from her host family.

Witnesses said rubber left on the road by the other vehicle suggested it had been on the wrong side of the road.

Police are investigating.
