Wins for Crushers, Repo and Giants

-

United Valleys Crushers 48 Kerikeri Makos 16 (half time 18-0): Crushers cruised to a comfortable win over the Makos in round 6 of the Taitokerau Rugby League Premiership at Taheke Stadium on Saturday.

With both sides returning to the fray following the Easter break, Crushers coach Peter Makiha said the visitors were far more competitive than the final result might suggest, noting, “Score wasn’t really reflective of the game.”

Standouts included Jason Grey and Mark Lloyd sharing the top of the tackle count with 22 apiece, with Hemi Cooper and Haylin Rogers also notable.

Aupouri Repo 18 Pawarenga Broncos 21: The most closely contested match of the round took place at Te Kao [venue unconfirmed] with the visitors just pipping the homeside in what appears to have been a tantalising close encounter.

The other result from Saturday was, Uta Te Whanga Giants 46 Taiamai Taniwha 22, with byes for the Ngai Kahu Sharks and Moerewa Tigers.

Note, TRL organisers advised they were unable to revise the draw — after both the Kaikohe Lions and Ngati Wai Seahawks tumbled into the abyss shortly after the start of the season — in order to avoid having two teams sitting by twiddling their thumbs each week. The only realistic option was to finish off round 1 and then go back to the drawing board for the second round. ■ STANDINGS were yet to be updated at edition time, draw for this weekend’s games features nearby.
