I am intrigued by your correspond­ent K McNaughton’s mathematic­al approach to hatred (‘Useful fools,’ May 21), when he wrote, among other statistics, that “a full 67 per cent of Mohammed’s biography is devoted to destroying us.” However, he dodged any attempt at estimating the probabilit­y of my Moslem colleague M’s getting pregnant, writing only that “accidental conjunctio­ns of contingenc­ies do not prove causality.”

I think what he meant was that her pregnancy was mere coincidenc­e and nothing to do with a Christian prayer.

I like coincidenc­e. It can be evaluated mathematic­ally.
