Steeds steal the show at Waipap

Round two of the Far North Darts championsh­ips began last Wednesday night, with teams divided into three divisions. The following results were recorded.

Awanui 13 Mission Impossible 3: Ted Watts top scored for Awanui and Erana Watts hit 59HF, while Tyla Stevenson hit the first 140 and led Mission’s scoring.

Houhora Chiefs 6 Houhora Warriors 10: Highlights from the Houhora derby included a Kane Henderson 180 and a Robert Bradley 117HF, while Warriors’ Pete Watson hit a great 105 finish.

Tuatua Tavern 7 RSA Kauri 9: Local Warren Scott 113HF, Tapihana Rollo 180 while Ariana Popata led the Kauri scoring as the visitors took control and snuck home.

Mussel Rock 10 Ahipara Aces 6: This match featured 79 100-plus scores including 16 for Rock’s Denny Watling along with his 180 and 120HF, while Mike Shalders led Aces scoring but it proved not enough.

Collards Raiders 5 XL 11: XL as two-time grand finalists were too good with a Jamie Hilton Jones 112HF and Rocky Manga leading the scoring, while Raiders standouts were Derek Ashley 180, and Vince Sualo 105 finish and top scoring.

RSA Red 8 RSA Pixies 9: Ava Foster threw 88HF and David Ihaka led the Pixies’ scoring, while Melena Thomas was the Reds’ top scorer and she also won the last game to make it 8-all and take proceeding­s to a 1001 team game, where the Pixies claimed victory.

Squash Club 5 RSA Nomads 11: This match featured 75 100 plus scores including 17 by Harry Tepania, along with David Tepania’s 104 finish, while Johnny Hunter hit 180 and the match HF of 109 but the Nomads eventually proved too sharp.

Waipapakau­ri 10 90 Mile Collards 6: The Steed couple stole the show, with both winning all their games and Jo hitting 17 100-plus scores while Brian hit a 106 finish; also, Laurence Erstich 100 finish and Jody Hunter claimed the match HF of 115, while Steve Doak top scored for 90 Mile.

The Vault 9 Awanui WBTB 8: One of two matches last week which had to be decided by a team game, the Vault all scored well, led by Brent McLuckie with 12 100-pluses and Richard Martin 81HF, while Frank Roberts led the WBTB scoring.

DRAW for tomorrow: Aces vs Waipapakau­ri, Mussel Rock vs XL, 90 Mile vs Raiders; Arrows vs Kauri, Nomads vs Chiefs, Squash Club vs Warriors, bye: Tuatua Tavern; Awanui WBTB vs RSA Red, Pixies vs Awanui, Mission Impossible vs The Vault.

In other local news, the Far North reps dominated their Bay of Islands counterpar­ts in the Challenge Cup event played at the Kaitaia Golf Club in Ahipara on Sunday. For the A team, Derek Ashley and Pita each nailed 180, while Bay’s Simon hit a 160 high finish as the Far North claimed a comfortabl­e 10-6 win in the doubles and 13-3 in the singles to retain the Challenge Cup 23-9.

The B team also dominated, with Harry Tepania 116HF and Maria 168HS; Far North winning 13-3 in the doubles and 14-2 in the singles to retain the John Chapman Challenge Shield 27-5.
