Bob the Builder bestowed with life membership

-

The countless hours spent on a major renovation project to the Cooper’s Beach Bowling clubhouse by Jim Naylor were acknowledged with the presentation of a life membership to the organisation last month.

As club president and nicknamed ‘Bob the Builder’, Naylor was one of two people honoured with life membership at the club’s AGM on Sunday, May 25. Naylor spearheaded the massive refit designed to combat the declining interest in lawn bowling and turn the club into a modern, relevant facility for the wider Doubtless Bay community to enjoy in years to come (as noted in the story, Cooper’s Beach club gets major makeover, May 23) .

The other member to be awarded life membership was Eileen Pickard as recognition of her unstinting contribution to the club over many years.

With a new lease on life thanks to the recently completed renovation project, there was a very good attendance at the AGM, where the following were elected for the 2019/20 season.

Patrons: Geoff Herbert and Pat Rayner, president: Jim Naylor, vice president: Steve Barber, secretary: Carol Sell, treasurer and match convenor: Margaret Wildbore, indoor/ house: Peter Wilson, committee: Alan Bright and Pam Roughton, social representatives: Lea Herbert and Chris Alexander, green superintendent: Alan Bright, selectors: Pam Naylor and Alan Bright. Sue Smith, Logan Taylor and Val Herzog were later coopted on to the committee. ****

The following Tuesday saw a respectable field of 14 teams turn out to play in the Geards Funeral Home Tournament at Cooper’s Beach.

Although the weather forecast did not bode well, the organisers decided to take a gamble and complete the triples (any combination) event on May 28, which attracted players from Kerikeri and Far North RSA to join the host club members.

The gusty wind kept up all day which made the bowling challenging at times, but apart from a heavy shower which stopped play for five minutes in the second game, all four games of 1 hour 10 minutes were completed, with the top three placings all going to the local teams.

Results: Kyra Rapana, Liz Walters, John Rapana 4 wins, 22 ends, 43 points, 1; Pam Naylor, Carol Sell, Jim Naylor 31⁄2, 19, 38, 2; Dennis Breckon, Margaret Wildbore, Trevor Smith 3, 22, 46, 3; while the Good Sports prize went to Patsy Thornton, Stu Pedersen and Dennis Lattimer.

Organisers thanked the event’s generous sponsor, Glenis and Bev in the kitchen, Ngaire and Barrie on match duty, and the greens and bar staff.
