8 BALL

The unbeaten Renegades were given a good run for their money by the Awanui 8-Ballers at Awanui Hotel last Tuesday, which proved one of the talking points from week 9 of the Far North Pool Association’s 2019 championship.

Local commentator Sharpshooter noted it was all square at the turn in this match — i.e. after the singles games were completed — while the first game of doubles was won by the locals to suggest an upset was on the cards before the Renegades finally established control to emerge 7-5 winners.

Elsewhere, the Houhora Marlins drew with Waipap Gold at Waipap after leading 5-3 at the turn. Gold then proceeded to win three on the trot, which set up the last doubles game for a cliffhanger, which was eventually won by Marlins’ Len Crewther and Rose Leef.

Other results saw the Razorbacks lose at home to the Collards Str8 Up crew by 7-5 after scores were level at the turn, regarded overall as a “fair result” with both teams sitting on 52 points on the table; the Vault Bar emerging 7-5 victors at home over Awaz Tigers One (5-3 after the singles); the RSA Rangers enjoying a win at home over the KA Rebels 9-3 (6-2 singles) with Peter Pitchford a standout after winning his first singles match of the season for the Rangers; and the Titans bouncing back from the previous week’s loss by thrashing Awaz Tigers Two 10-2 (6-2).

STANDINGS: Titans 75 points, Renegades 69, Rangers 62, Vault Bar 54, Tigers One 54, Marlins 53, Str8 Up 52, Razorbacks 52, Awanui 8 Ball 50, Rebels 47, Waipap Gold 41, Tigers Two 39.
