Not for the faint of heart
Kaitaia’s Bushland Trust routinely observes Arbor Day by adding to the plantings around the dune lakes inland from Waipapakauri Ramp. And almost as routinely the volunteers who turn out to help are greeted with less than clement weather.
So it was again on Friday, when dozens of people of all ages arrived with raincoats and spades to further plant a filtration zone in an area that drains into Lake Ngatu.
Actually the weather wasn’t too bad early on, and 1000 plants had been put into the ground by the time the wind and rain arrived in earnest, forcing the Department of Conservation to move its barbecue to a more sheltered spot.
