Opening day rites for spring
The Far North Kaitaia RSA Bowls Club enjoyed spring conditions its opening day for the new summer season recently where the weather, after early rain, cleared up and turned into a nice summery day although a strong wind prevailed throughout.
To open proceedings, club president Lillian Wills introduced the 2019/ 20 committee as, patron Dennis ‘Marty’ Doak, vice president Mike Reddy, secretary Reo King-Bennetts, treasurer Selwyn Hargreaves, match convenor Tupu Campbell, club coach Jean Huxtable, committee members Mavis Topia, Joanne Milich and Allan Thom, and greenkeeper Kevin Briscoe.
Wells then asked Milich — as the club’s most improved player last season — to put up the first jack before Doak, as patron, rolled out the first bowl of the season.
With the opening day rites completed, the KPH Construction Any Combination Triples tournament got under way with a strong field of 20 teams, where the format was for two-bowl triples and 12 ends.
The results were as follows, all placegetters from the host club unless noted. Allen Thom, Jill Phillips, Glenis Muir 4 wins, 66 points, 32 ends, 1; Ken Smith, Trevor and Sue Smith (Cooper’s Beach) 4, 52, 29, 2; Mike Reddy, Greg Taylor, Evelyn Bradley 31⁄2, 55, 29, 3; Edward Hau, Mary Korewha, Brent Colley (Opononi) 3, 55, 28, 4; Jean Huxtable, Freda and Colin May 3, 53, 28, 5.
At the close of play, Wells thanked the sponsors for their generous and longstanding support, which was estimated at being around 20 years.
She also thanked the greenkeeper, tournament controllers, raffle sellers, kitchen staff, with special praise for the participants from Church Rd, Cooper’s Beach and Opononi for joining the host club members to celebrate the occasion.
■ The next tournament at the RSA is the Geard’s Funeral Home Any Combination 2x4x2 Pairs on Wednesday, September 18.
