Awanui Titans dig deep to beat determined Rangers

-

A round-up from the final week of the Far North Pool Association’s regular season began by noting the Titans overcame a determined RSA Rangers 8-4 (where the score was 4-4 after the singles were completed) in one of three matches played at the Awanui Sports Complex last Tuesday night.

In his weekly analysis of the week 22 results, Sharpshooter noted Awaz Tigers One thrashed the Houhora Marlins 9-3 (6-2) where Christine Stratton had “a celestial lightbulb moment” in her singles victory against Mac Walters.

“Hitting the light with her cue which caused a few laughs only for the bulb to then be smashed by He Who Shall Not Be Named in removing the said item.”

The third match at Awanui saw the 2019 Minor Premiers, the Renegades, scrape past Awaz Tigers Two 7-5 (5-3).

Elsewhere, Waipap Gold played out a good night of pool at home against Herekino Razorbacks.

“The Gold may have lost 7-5 (6-2) singles, but they have been good enough all year to surprise when it’s least expected, as they did in winning three out of four doubles and the win not confirmed until the last game of the night.”

The other two results from the night saw the Rebels lose 7-5 to Awanui 8 Ball after an even singles battle, while the Vault Bar did much the same, beating Str8 Up Crew 7-5 as well.

FINAL STANDINGS: Renegades 175 points, Titans 172, Vault Bar, 146, Rangers 141, Tigers One 136, Razorbacks 131, Awanui 8 Ball 126, Str8 Up 123, Marlins 117, Rebels 111, Tigers Two 110, Waipap Gold 91.

DRAW for Tuesday, September 10, with home teams given first, is: Renegades vs Titans, Vault Bar vs RSA Rangers, Awaz Tigers One vs Razorbacks, Awanui 8 Ball vs Collards Str8 Up, Marlins vs Rebels, Awaz Tigers Two vs Waipap Gold.

Sharpshooter went on to note the premiership will be fought out by the top four teams from the round robin, with the rest of the field being split into two other divisions with four in each to decide the minor placings as the race to the finals at Houhora Golf Club on Sunday, September 22, gets underway.
