Nominations open for 2020 awards

-

Northland’s environmental champions are being invited to put their names forward for this year’s Northland Regional Council environmental awards.

“All over Northland, thousands of people are working to improve our environment, often quietly behind the scenes,” NRC chair Penny Smart said.

“We want to publicly thank them for joining us in our mission to create a healthy environment, a strong economy and resilient communities. ”

The awards, presented for the first time last year, were designed to recognise and celebrate kaitiakitanga in action and highlight the ‘can-do’ attitudes many people from all walks of life were harnessing to help the region’s environment thrive, by means including getting rid of pests, clearing weeds, planting erosion-prone land, and sustainability projects in schools.

This year would follow a similar format to last year, with awards for contributions in the community, pest management, education, water quality improvement, industry, leadership, innovation and kaitiakitanga.

Entries and nominations can be lodged at www.nrc.govt.nz/ environmentalawards, with further information available from the council’s marketing and engagement team (events@nrc. govt.nz, freephone 0800 002-004).
