Chilled melon saves the day at Houhora

-

The Houhora Bowling Club managed to complete two major tournaments from its 2019/20 programme earlier this month where the weather was so hot and balmy, club spokeswoman Christine Stratton noted having plates of chilled watermelon on hand throughout the day to hydrate the players was very much appreciated.

She began her update by noting the Jarrett Memorial attracted a full green of players from Cooper’s Beach, Oruru, RSA, Opononi and Houhora. The top placegetters in the annual Cowley’s any combination fours tournament were, Barrie Johnstone, Stef Hildreth, Kevin Briscoe and Ned Busby 31⁄2 wins, 20 ends, and 42 points, 1; Allan Martin with Doug and Liz Robb and Pania Roberts 31⁄2, 19, 31, 2; then Marty Doak, Val Brydon, Russell Hockley and Lilian Wells 3, 21, 36, 3.

That was followed by the annual Geards Tournament which was contested by teams from RSA, Coopers Beach, Oruru and the host club. The top placegetters in the any combination triples event were, Ken and Sue Smith and Ross Hulme 4, 21, 54, 1; Lloyd Matthews, Sonny Hokai and

Norm Allan 3, 21, 52, 2; Cedric Campbell, Liz Muru and Jill Phillips 3, 13, 32, 3.

On behalf of organisers,

Stratton gave a thank you to the major sponsors from each event for their generosity, noting that without, this tournaments could not be held. Geenkeeper Cedric Campbell was also singled out for praise for all the work carried out on the greens “which has been creating a lot of positive comments from fellow bowlers”.

In other news, the second round of the club’s summer twilight series is now under way with the usual fun and camaraderie coming to the fore, enhanced by the lavish dinner being shared by all competitors after each evening’s play.
