Juniors give old boys a run for their money

Trevor Smith has qualified to represent Coopers Beach at the Bowls Far North Centre’s champ of champs event later this year after winning the club’s domestic men’s singles title earlier this month.

The event was played over two days, February 8-9, and attracted a strong field of 16 men who played four games per day of 21 shots or 13⁄4 hours, with no time limit for the final/ possible final.

Smith managed to retain both lives on his way to the title by beating Clive Scahill in the final on the second day. Other players to make it to the second day were Allan Bright, Jim Naylor and Dennis Breckon. The rest of the field included Ross Hulme, John Rapana, Barry Townsley, Ken Smith, Allen Larkan, Mike Bairstow, Jack Hughes, Jeff Bell, Richard Rowbotham, Andy Edwards and Hayden Wood.

Organisers were pleased to see a strong turnout of eight junior bowlers entering the event, giving the old boys a run for their money.

The following Tuesday (February 11) saw a field of 16 teams contesting the domestic leads and twos choice any combinatio­n domestic pairs tournament, where the graded leads and twos ask a graded three or skip to play with them.

Club reporter Margaret Wildbore said the annual event proved a “fun day as always.” After four games of 1 hour 10 minutes, the top placegette­rs were, Jim Naylor and Sue Smith 4 wins, 34 ends, 82 points, 1; Jack Hughes and Clive Scahill 4, 29, 72, 2; Trevor Smith and Barbara Scahill 4, 23, 60, 3; while the good sports prize went to Patsy Thornton with Jan Hickey

Organisers thanked all concerned including those who set up the green, along with the markers, bar staff and match committee for both events. ****

The Coopers’s Beach club also held the Pam and Dave Roughton Wrathall Rosebowl any combinatio­n triples event on Saturday. Report forthcomin­g.
