Committee elects new officers

-

he Karikari Community Hall and Recreation Hub has conducted its annual general meeting, electing Bertha Yerkovich as chairwoman and Roy Scahill as her deputy.

The secretary is Leona Steel, treasurer Diane Mackay, and assistant treasurer Karen Urlich, with Willie Steel, Barbara Gibson, Judy Billington, Kath Scahill, Marianne RawiriPomare, Phil Aspin, Esta Doyle and Kay Damsted also on the committee.

Thompson Lawrence chaired the meeting, which saw a number of new and old faces elected, some of them representing groups that use the hall for a range of activities.

Bertha Yerkovich said she was happy to take on the position of chairwoman as a way to honour and remember all those who had worked hard to establish the facility, and had now gone, prompted by the absence of many familiar faces at this year’s Anzac Day service.

She also felt it was important for the new committee to focus on the hall rather than spread their energies elsewhere.

To that end it was resolved that the Recreation Hub would be placed under the guidance of the Karikari Peninsula Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association, with all funds currently in hand to be used for recreational purposes. The meeting heard the newly formed Karikari Peninsula Community Association Incorporated would ensure that funding streams were more easily accessible for future projects.

It was suggested the hall could benefit from that in the future, should the new committee wish to avail themselves of the opportunity.

Karen Urlich also spoke, reminding everyone that the old playground at the former kura was still the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, and was not safe for children to play on. The ministry had been asked to do something to ensure the safety of children who might find a way to access it.

The first meeting of the new committee is scheduled for July 6, while the Karikari Peninsula Residents’ and Ratepayers’ Association will meet at the hall at 7pm on Tuesday, June 15.
