The Northland Age

FAST FORWARD WHANGA¯REI!

- Vince Cocurillo, Whanga¯ rei Mayor

Despite the setbacks and slowdown caused by Covid

and subsequent economic challenges, the Whangarei

District remains a high growth District that can expect sustained growth

over the next 30 years.

If anything, remote working, the volatile economy and rising house prices have driven people to seek the better life/work balance that can be found in our District.

Growth is a good thing, and it is our job, as Council to cater to it and where possible, stay ahead of the curve. That includes ensuring enough land is zoned for the right kind of development in the right places. We need to protect the characteristics we each treasure. We need good transport , water supply, waste removal, sewage treatment, and active and buzzing business sector, buildings going up safely within reasonable timeframes – and council has a part to play in all of these.

While major growth has been happening in north Tikipunga and Kamo, Maunu and Three Mile Bush, it is also surging in the south of the District. The population of Marsden Point/Ruakaka is close to that of Kaikohe and Dargaville. Ruakaka will probably be larger than both by 2023.

Some plans for development in that area might have stalled in 2020, but I believe they are ramping up again - Northport has recently submitted its resource consent application to expand its operations, our

irst cruise ship visit is booked for early 2024 and interesting plans are being discussed for the old re inery site. Such things as the dry dock and relocation of the Navy may still be on the table.

Not only do we need to cater to the infrastructure requirements of this population, Council also needs to foster the kinds of activities and events that enhance wellbeing. The Rally, Rugby World Cup and events of that scale show the world what we have to offer. They reward our own community and attract visitors who boost our economy. Local events create a sense of community and togetherness – with the Endless Summer, Fringe and Silver festivals catering to a wide range of people and interests.

Our district is becoming increasingly culturally diverse as people from a wide range of cultures come here, become embedded and contribute expertise, business know-how and fresh ideas. With an unusually even rural/urban split in our district it seems we really can provide something for everyone.

Overall Whangarei District is in a strong position. Our economy will improve, our natural environment is outstanding and we are building better facilities for our citizens. Most of the challenges provided by an expanding population with higher expectations are good problems to have. The District has an exciting future and I am proud to be at the helm of this Council for the term to come.
