Matt Nel­son rec­om­mended six ways in which the ki­wifruit in­dus­try could take the next steps to­wards sus­tain­abil­ity;

Mea­sur­able and tan­gi­ble goals for NZ grow­ers to achieve, which could in­clude ad­dress­ing chal­lenges like car­bon neu­tral­ity, emis­sions, zero waste and cre­at­ing so­cial net worth.

• Com­mit­ted lead­er­ship and strate­gic think­ing within Ze­spri to drive

sus­tain­abil­ity.

• Does trace­abil­ity need to be leg­is­lated in NZ?

• A se­nior lead­er­ship team for sus­tain­abil­ity is needed to en­sure the in­dus­try is

well-re­sourced, sup­ported, co-or­di­nated and ca­pa­ble of de­liv­er­ing pre­mi­ums.

Col­lab­o­ra­tion needs to be de­vel­oped to help solve dif­fi­cult problems or is­sues around sus­tain­abil­ity.

Mea­sur­ing, re­view­ing and re­port­ing are im­por­tant for cred­i­bil­ity and ac­count­abil­ity.
