False resume accused remanded

-

A CONVICTED sex offender who allegedly faked his resume to work at six schools across the central and upper North Island, with a total roll of about 2250 students, was remanded in custody when he appeared in Auckland District Court yesterday.

The man, who has name suppression, was charged with using a false curriculum vitae at six different schools and for dishonestly using a birth certificate.

The names of the schools have also been suppressed. He had already been charged by the Corrections Department with breaching the conditions of his parole after being freed from jail following a conviction for a sexual offence against a minor in 2004.

The new charges laid yesterday chart the man’s alleged progression since mid 2007.

He was alleged to have gained his first job with the fake credentials at a small school in the Bay of Plenty and worked there from mid 2007 to late 2008.

He was also alleged

to have worked

at another school in Taranaki for five months in 2007. From there he is alleged to have worked for a few months at another Bay of Plenty school in late 2008 and then a third Bay of Plenty school between July and August 2009.

His longest period of employment was at an Auckland school, which charge sheets alleged he worked at from October 2009 till November 2011. His last period of employment was at a South Auckland school for 11 weeks until his arrest in February. The schools have a combined roll of 2258 children.

Parents from schools where the man was employed were at yesterday’s hearing, as were board of trustees members and lawyer Christine Chilwell, who is representing three schools.

The man faced away from the public gallery throughout his appearance.

The Education Ministry is investigating how the man continued to work in schools.
