The series seesaw earlier lurched in New Zealand’s favour in a remarkable first session, sparked by the unlikely figure of 32-year-old Gillespie.

Gillespie made up for lost time in his first test since December, 2008.

His first six-over spell of 4-23 saw the tourists tumble to 88-6, with Hashim Amla and Jacques Kallis two world-class victims.

Kallis, fresh from his 42nd test century in Dunedin, was greeted by a bouncer then touched an edge down the leg side, one of four catches for Kruger van Wyk.

AB de Villiers was cracked on the shoulder, first ball, then edged through the vacant third slip area that should have been occupied, such was Gillespie’s intensity.

It cost New Zealand, as de Villiers batted three hours for 83 and the tourists regained the advantage. Then the lower order chimed in on the friendly surface, the final three wickets adding a crucial 102 after Gillespie grabbed his fifth via the inside edge of Mark Boucher’s bat.

Morne Morkel blasted 35 not out at No 10 to force New Zealand on to the back foot again, where they remained for the rest of the day.
