STEINWAY UNVEILING
7.30pm Adam Concert Room NZ School of Music Gate 7, Kelburn Pde piano while Hudson listened, before comparing notes
‘‘It was so interesting to see how the two pianists responded to each piano,’’ Hudson says.
‘‘They would both play very different pieces, bringing out incredibly different tones and depths in each. It was so useful to have them both taking part in the process.’’
They soon narrowed it down to four or five choices, but making the final selection was a close call, Hudson says.
‘‘We were all attracted to different things. Piano number seven was utterly beautiful and could make the notes soar, but didn’t have that flexibility we were looking for.’’
The group went back and forth comparing the tone and depth of each piano, closing the lid of any that did not meet their standards.
But something convinced them to reconsider piano number six after at first ruling it out, with its responsiveness to a wide range of music finally giving it the win.
‘‘It had a very, very special quality to it that I can’t quite pin down. It could make a simple piece really sing, and get an incredible depth for the concert pieces too.’’
Piano number six
will be
un- veiled at a ceremony in the Adam Concert Room tonight, but Hudson is more excited about what is to come.
‘‘The best thing is that this piano will grow into its sound over the next year. That’s going to be so wonderful to watch unfold.’’
