Gareth Morgan on the right track
In the early ’60s I was often in the Rimutaka Forest Park and the sound of the native birds in the trees was deafening.
Recently we took a walk in the same area, along the Five Mile Loop Track, and the lack of bird life was very noticeable indeed. My guess is that the same thing has happened all over the country.
Humans and their activities and the foolish importation of other non-native species are the sole cause of the loss of our native birds.
Gareth Morgan is definitely on the right track, but it is the responsibility of all citizens to protect the native birds the best way we can.
Any highlighting of the plight of our native species has to be commended, especially when he is offering to put money up to help.
The way we are going there will not be any native animals or birds anywhere except perhaps in zoos or museums. DENIS HEALEY
Paparangi done so a further three times since. She has been told each time that it will be attended to, but to no avail. She was also told that the contractors concerned had failed to find the cause of the fault. Be that as it may, it is still the council’s responsibility to get the problem fixed.
The response to the problem so far is reminiscent of Third-World incompetence. There also appears to be complete indifference to the safety and well-being of the users of the roads and pavements in the affected areas. I trust the new chief executive will ensure more prompt and efficient council action in the future. KEITH SANDERS
