Bay regular on target for carnival

-

TRIPLE CROWN regular Fritzy Boy is likely to be on hand again for the Hawke’s Bay carnival to continue his remarkable attendance record on the weightfor-age circuit.

Part-owner and trainer Alby MacGregor was delighted with the eight-year-old’s effort for third when resuming under 61kg at Hastings on Saturday, but is loath to commit to further handicap events.

“He had been in work a while and always goes well fresh, but it’s a question of how much is he going to have to carry?” he said.

“Other than weight-for-age, there’s not a lot else. We might put him in the Whyte Handicap and that will depend on what the field is like and the weight he gets.

“He’s a marvellous old horse and so tough – he’s come through Saturday’s race well and is kicking his heels up and galloping around the paddock.

“We’d like to have another crack at the Foxbridge Plate and then there’s Hastings in the spring. Those races suit him ideally.”

Fritzy Boy finished runner-up to Fleur de Lune in the Group III feature at Te Rapa last year after beating the mare to the title in 2011.

He has been a constant feature of recent Hawke’s Bay carnivals and won the Group I Mudgway Partsworld Stakes (now the Makfi Challenge Stakes) in 2008 and has contested at least one of the Triple Crown events in the subsequent four years.
