Geary’s breakthrough win now secures his tour card
JOSH GEARY has found a tour to play on after his maiden PGA Tour of Australasia win on Sunday.
The 28-year-old has been in the golfing wilderness without a tour to play on in recent times, but his West Australian Open win at the Mount Lawley Golf Club has ended that.
Geary’s five-shot win earns him a start in next week’s Perth International and secures his tour card for the remainder of this season and 2014.
While that’s a huge relief for Geary, picking up his breakthrough Australasian tour win was equally exciting.
‘‘It has been six or seven years that I have been trying for a win,’’ he said. ‘‘The highest hurdle is the first one. Now I have broken through I should be good for the near future.’’
Geary’s eight-shot win in the Charles Tour’s Tauranga Open recently did show he was in form, but this is a whole new level of competition. And he still dominated. ‘‘You always want to have the battle on the final day. But it’s nice to know I had it somewhat sewn up if I played within myself.’’
Geary’s final round, seven-under 65 was the low-round of the day.
‘‘This means a lot right now, especially with my status,’’ added Geary who attended PGA Tour of Australasia qualifying school this year.
‘‘It means I get a start next week which I wouldn’t have had. It also assures me starts all summer. It is huge from my career point of view.’’ He predicted this win is just the start of a big summer.
‘‘I have been hitting it well and putting great. My head is in a good place to I think I am ready for another couple of wins.’’
