Police seek help in identifying blankets Alex wrapped in
ALEX FISHER’S body was found wrapped in blankets on Waitarere Beach, police have confirmed.
Police are asking for help to identify bedding items, including blankets and a sleeping bag, found with the body of the Levin 10-yearold.
Detective senior sergeant Neil Furlong said the blankets were all removed with the body. He would not speculate on whether the body had been moved to the spot where it was found, and would not comment on how Alex died.
Alex’s body was found on Waitarere Beach on Thursday, October 8, after a three-day search.
Two continental blankets, a sleeping bag and a sheet were located with his body.
Forlong said police had released three pictures which showed two continental blankets, a sleeping bag, and a sheet.
They were appealing for anyone who might recognise the items, and they were working through a number of exhibits to help them build a picture of the events that led to Alex’s death.
Fifteen staff were working on the investigation, which was not straight forward, and police were taking a meticulous approach, Furlong said.
They were also looking into any possible links between a burglary and Alex’s death.
They had made a lot of progress, but still had a lot of work to do. Police were continuing to work through a range of forensic evidence to build a picture of the events which led to Alex’s death.
‘‘We are keeping an open mind about what happened, and are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry,’’ Furlong said.
‘‘We continue to appeal to the public for any information which could assist us.’’
Anyone with information is asked to contact Levin police, or call the Operation Waitarere number 0800 234 7437
Alex was last seen on CCTV footage at 6.30pm on October 5, near Waitarere Forest, about 10km from Levin.
