CONTINUING

-

Directed By Colin Trevorrow. Starring Chris Pratt, Bruce Dallas Howard, Irrfan Khan. Movie: Extras: To quote a line from this supersized sequel about a genetically engineered dinosaur hybrid gone rogue, ‘‘It’s just like taking a stroll through the woods – 65 million years ago.’’ Just as the 1992 original set the benchmark for visual effects, so does Jurassic World up the ante to be bigger, louder and scarier – not unlike the King Kong of dinos cooked up in the lab to heighten the prehistoric theme park’s ‘‘Wow!’’ factor. The screenplay seems to have been cobbled together by political Neanderthals but for sheer extravagant adventure, and as a witty homage to Steven Spielberg movies on the side, this ridiculous romp about a raptor whisperer with Indiana Jones swagger is a must to revel in on Blu-ray, complete with 7.1 audio and insights into how the eye-popping setpieces were realised. (Subtitled.) From the BBC Earth stable comes a breathtakingly cinematic wildlife documentary. Ignore the title that makes it sound like a Disney video and excuse the lapses into purple narration that will have you squirming more than the sight of blind ants devouring everything in their path. What makes Enchanted Kingdom so exhilarating is its jawdropping footage of African creatures and landscapes that was filmed in 4K in 3-D. It’s more spectacular than any visual effects Hollywood could conjure yet appears to have been released theatrically only in Japan. While the Blu-ray transfer is exceptional, it is 2-D only and with none of the extras on the threedisc Japanese edition (making-of hour, directors’ commentary, interviews). (Subtitled.) Directed by Dan Fogelman. Starring Al Pacino, Annette Bening, Jennifer Garner. Movie: Extras: Nothing director Dan Fogelman has scripted, be it top ‘toons like Cars and Tangled, or laboured comedies like Trip and Last Vegas, can prepare you for this tender, funny, telling drama about life’s choices. A vintage Al Pacino plays a washed-up, womanising rock star who tries to reconnect with his estranged son (Bobby Cannavale) while shrugging off his soul-destroying legacy to reinvent himself as the singer he always wanted to be. Inspired by the poignant true story of a folk singer who missed out on meeting John Lennon because he received a letter from the exBeatle 34 years too late, Danny Collins is virtually pitch perfect. A pity the extras – a four-minute promotion and a slideshow of Collins’ album covers – aren’t worthy of just as big a ‘‘Bravo!’’ (Subtitled.) Directed by Claude Berri. Starring Yves Montand, Gerard Depardieu, Emmanuelle Beart. Movie: Extras: None. Claude Berri’s ravishing tour-deforce of a tragi-comedy, set in southern France just after the end of World War I, has been dusted off on Blu-ray nearly 30 years after it captivated film festival audiences. Gerard Depardieu plays a hunchback tax collector who inherits a farm with a hidden spring coveted by his conniving neighbours (Yves Montand, Daniel Auteil). The quality of the transfer is hindered by the age and condition of the source but is worth the upgrade. Hopefully the sequel, Manon des Sources, in which the tormented hunchback’s daughter (Emmanuelle Beart) reaps rightful retribution for her father’s fate, will soon surface on Blu-ray, too (in the United States, both can be bought as a double feature). (Subtitled.) Starring Mary Tyler Moore, Edward Asner, Betty White. Season: Extras: None. I made a Ted Baxter-size goof in my review of MTM’s fifth season: the Chuckles Bites the Dust classic is on this compilation. Otherwise, season six is recommended for the episodes where Mary Richards moves into a swanky new apartment, Eileen Heckart guest stars as Mary’s hard-news aunt, Sue Ann Nivens ‘‘adopts’’ a troubled black teenager, and Mary betrays Lou’s trust when he reveals he had a one-night stand with Sue Ann. This was the show’s penultimate season and ranks as the best after season five, winning Emmy Awards for not only Chuckles but also outstanding comedy series and Moore, Ted Knight and Betty White. (Subtitled.)
