WHAT’S BLACK SKY GOT TO DO WITH LONG WHITE CLOUD?

For those who intend voting in the flag referendum, it would be helpful to set aside some of the promotion that has gone into selling this concept to the public and note that the silver fern and the koru are simply forest scrub.

Whatever people’s opinion of John Key, or his supposed reasons in favour of a flag change, only someone in a position of political significan­ce has the momentum to give the nation the opportunit­y for a full debate.

The late Lloyd Morrison worked hard to create some debate for a change but, even with his Zealand, ferns are to be found flourishin­g in most regions of the earth.

The Red Peak is described as representi­ng the red earth and the black section as representi­ng black sky; who living in The Land of the Long White Cloud financial input and personal drive, not enough interest could be made to move the discussion to the next stage.

No matter the short list chosen or the way it is put to the ballot for a final decision, no flag will meet the approval of all.

Talk of the cost or other possible options is wasted. The wants to be represente­d by black sky?

As for the red earth, we certainly have nothing as magnificen­t as Uluru nor, in fact, the red earth of the Pilbara.

money is committed. Spoiling a voting paper would be a missed opportunit­y. To assume the referendum won’t call for change may leave some in hindsight wishing they had ranked the choices for a different contender to the current flag.
