Elton fans bring smiles to retailers
CHRISTMAS came early for Wellington retailers on Saturday as thousands of Elton John fans spent up a storm.
Some businesses reported one of the best trading days this year and want Lambton Quay closed to traffic in the run-up to Christmas.
A large crane working in Lambton Quay closed the area to traffic, which gave the downtown area an unexpected boost.
First Retail Group client services manager Lorraine Nicholson said shoppers temporarily took over the street and enjoyed the opportunity to spill on to the roadway, creating a festival atmosphere.
‘‘The streets, stores and cafes were packed in scenes reminiscent of days just before Christmas. Most importantly, people were spending, which has been a welcome start to the seasonal shopping spree . . .’’
The concert had been a defined as a ‘‘bookend’’ to the Christmas season, she said.
‘‘Spending has been strong and from experience, we can anticipate this to continue into December.’’
Retailers throughout the city experienced a similar boost in trade from the thousands of visitors and Wellingtonians who had decided to make a day of the concert, she said.
The arrival of David Jones, Topshop and other new retailers in 2016 would see CBD visitor numbers lift significantly, Nicholson said.
‘‘The city will need to strategise carefully to accommodate them. Peak season pedestrianisation are part of the consideration set for 2016 and this will be discussed by stakeholders . . .’’
Atticus Shoes owner Malcolm Gore said Saturday demonstrated how the city should consider closing the Quay during key events – and on Saturdays leading up to Christmas.
‘‘Creating a more relaxed and entertaining shopping environment is necessary to ensure people enjoy the city without the competition from cars and buses.’’
