Hayne closer to 49ers recall

- KRISTEN TSIAMIS

JARRYD HAYNE’S chances at making a return to the San Francisco 49ers have improved drastically as the struggling team’s disastrous record continues.

The 49ers have suffered yet another fumbling defeat, this time, losing 29-13 to the Seattle Seahawks yesterday.

The two players who replaced the former rugby league star, returner Bruce Ellington and running back Shaun Draughn put in a disappointing performance, sending the 49ers to a three-win and seven-loss record.

San Francisco coach Jim Tomsula was fuming. ‘‘I was definitely disappointed in the performance.’’

Tomsula has conceded that he will consider all players on a week-by-week basis, meaning that the door is again open for Hayne to revive his NFL dream.

Hayne was waived after he fumbled three punts in his first six games, and subsequently signed to the franchise’s practice squad three weeks ago.

The Seahawks

went

into

the first quarter with a 13-0 lead, after Draughn fumbled the ball in the second play of the game.

The fumbling woes didn’t end there, with Ellington coughing up a kick in the third quarter, which thankfully for San Francisco, bounced out of bounds.

The match against their division rivals was critical. The Seahawks were also missing their star running back, Mashawn Lynch, and the 49ers sent rookie Thomas Rawls to rush 30 times totaling 209 yards.

San Francisco are in last place in the NFC West Division. Seattle have improved to 5-5, trailing division leaders Arizona Cardinals (7-2).

Hayne left the comfort of being the star fullback for the Parramatta Eels in the National Rugby League at the end of 2014 to pursue his lifelong desire to play in the NFL.
